Background

Somaliland Y-PEER network, in close collaboration with the International Solidarity Foundation (ISF), is promoting awareness and reduction of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Somaliland. This initiative is part of the project, “Empowerment of Women and Girls and Zero Tolerance to all forms of FGM and VAWG” funded by ISF. The program aims to foster community awareness and behavioral change to reduce the prevalence of FGM and SGBV, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The overall goal of the program is to create a safer environment for women and girls by raising awareness, promoting zero tolerance towards FGM and SGBV, and empowering communities to advocate against these harmful practices.

Overall Objective

Somaliland Y-PEER aims to produce awareness raising songs and poems to be performed through its mobile caravan/theatre activities. These creative traditional songs will raise awareness about the dangers of FGM and SGBV, educate the community on their rights, and encourage a collective stand against these practices.

Scope

  • Develop and produce traditional songs including the lyrics, melodies and relevant music focusing on FGM, GBV and women empowerment and rights issues. The melodies should be original melodies for each song that align with traditional musical styles, enhancing their cultural appeal and effectiveness in conveying key messages.
  • Develop and produce poems to be used in awareness sessions, including both conversational forms and longer descriptive poems that capture and engage diverse audiences.
  • finalize all productions in digital form and share in flash disk or through a private link.

Scope of Work/Methodology

Y-PEER is seeking a professional poet and song writers who will be responsible for the following:

  • Write and compose at least three impactful songs that resonate with the cultural context and effectively communicate the dangers of FGM and SGBV etc.
    • One version of the songs should include music, and another should be without music to accommodate participants who may be hesitant to listen to music.
    • Write and compose a one power full poetry that enables people the severity of the FGM and GBV
    • Develop small one to one poem(s) that are in the form of conversation.
    • The songs should have a traditional folk style, enabling actors to perform Somali folk dances such as Jaandheer, Heello, and Dhaanto. The songs should be smooth, timely, and avoid being overly lengthy or noisy.
  • Work closely with Y-PEER to ensure that the songs and poems align with the program’s goals and the cultural context of the target communities.

Deliverables

  • Three original songs with and without music, featuring Somali folk elements and addressing the dangers of FGM and SGBV. The songs should be suitable for public awareness campaigns and dance performances.
  • Poems for awareness-raising, focusing on the purpose of the project
  • Professionally recorded audio versions of the songs and drama.
  • Regular consultation and coordination with Y-PEER to ensure the alignment of the creative work with the overall program objectives.

Duration of the Assignment

The assignment will begin immediately after the signing of the agreement and should be completed within 25 days. This includes the development and the production of the songs and poems.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in creating impactful songs and scripts, particularly in the context of social change.
  • Deep understanding of the cultural dynamics in Somaliland, especially concerning FGM and GBV.
  • Fluency in Somali and good communication skills in English.
  • Previous experience in similar work.
