The Secretary General of Waddani Party Central Committee Mr. Osman Afgaab on Monday held a press conference in Hargeisa and announced that the long-awaited Central Committee Convention will be held on 1st October 2016 and will continue for two days.
Mr. Afgaab urged the party’s Central Committee members to ensure that they all arrive in Hargeisa before the convention and participate in this crucial meeting on time.
The members of the Central Committee areย expected to officially nominate Waddani Party candidates for the presidential election expected to take place on 27 March 2017.
The chairperson of Waddani Mr. Abdirahman Irro who is also the chairman of Somaliland’s House of Representatives is widely expected to be nominated as presidential candidate while at least three members from Awdal region are likely to contestย for theย candidacy of deputy president.
If the convention takes place according to the dates announced by Mr. Afgaab , Waddani would be the second national party to hold its Central Committee Congress ahead of elections.
The ruling party (Kulmiye) conducted its Central Committee convention on 10 November 2015 and nominated Muuse Biihi Abdi (Kulmiye chairman) and Abdirahman Sayli’i (incumbent deputy president) as the candidates for president and deputyย president respectively.
Waddani is the major opposition party in Somaliland. The second opposition party, UCID, must hold its national convention to confirm party’s candidates latest 4 September 2016 as per a verdict by Somaliland Political Parties Registration and Verification Committee issued on 21st July 2016 following a prolonged bitter dispute between the top leaders of the party.
