The Chairman of the main Somaliland opposition party, UCID, Faisal Ali Warabe, has called on the Ethiopian Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to agree an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
“We add our voice to calls for de-escalation of the conflict in Ethiopia. As it appears the conflict may acquire international dimensions and can affect all countries in the Horn of Africa” Mr. Warabe said at a press conference at the party headquarters in Hargeisa.
“Our message to the Ethiopian Prime Minister [Abiy Ahmed] is: winning a Nobel Peace Prize and declaring a war on citizens are incompatible. We believe that the war must stop and talks should begin, in line with calls for de-escalation” Mr. Warabe went on to say.
Last week, the Ethiopian Government declared war against Tigray despite framing the conflict as “operations in Tigray to bring TPLF leaders to justice”.
The Ethiopian Government in Addis Ababa recently appointed an interim administration for Tigray against the wishes of Tigrayans in the region, who held their own elections in September.
The TPLF won the elections and the right to represent Tigray.
Mr. Faisal A. Warabe is the first Somali politician to openly call for cessation of hostilities between the TPLF and the Ethiopian Government forces as well as its allied Amhara militias.
